Chapter Ninety-One: Senior, Do Your Best
Luo Yixia was grinning like a fool.
“No showing off this afternoon. If you get hurt again, I won’t care for you anymore,” Song Chengyi said, looking up at her.
“I know, I know,” Luo Yixia replied, her dimples deepening with her smile.
Gan Yanyan packed her things, preparing to take a nap.
She had no idea where Luo Yixia had gone.
As she walked to the back window, ready to open it, she noticed two figures in the grove behind the building.
Leaning on the windowsill, Gan Yanyan squinted to see them clearly—a man and a woman.
Her curiosity piqued, Gan Yanyan decisively took out her phone for a photo, zooming in again and again until the image was crystal clear.
What?
Were her eyes playing tricks on her?
Wasn’t that Luo Yixia and Song Chengyi?
Seriously, could those two be any more obvious? Song Chengyi was actually crouched down, tending to her knee.
She was practically being force-fed with love.
“Yanyan, what are you doing with your phone?” a girl from the dorm asked, noticing her odd posture.
“Oh, I was just closing the window. I’m going to sleep now,” Gan Yanyan replied quickly, pocketing her phone and pulling the girl away before she could ask more.
The other girl thought nothing of it.
After a while, Luo Yixia and Song Chengyi returned.
It was summer, and ice melted quickly; soon, the ice was gone.
When Luo Yixia came back to the dorm, most people were already asleep, so she tiptoed to her bed.
Gan Yanyan looked up, “You’re back?”
Her teasing smile made Luo Yixia feel a little guilty.
“Yeah, just went to the bathroom,” Luo Yixia said as she lifted the quilt and sat on her bed.
“Xiaxia, I don’t think I can stay single any longer. I need to find a boyfriend soon,” Gan Yanyan suddenly changed the subject.
“What’s wrong?” Luo Yixia was still not used to her abrupt topic changes.
“I’m constantly being force-fed dog food—it’s just too miserable,” Gan Yanyan muttered into her pillow.
“Is that so…” Luo Yixia didn’t know what to say.
Nor did she dare ask, feeling uneasy.
Could she have seen us just now? Probably not. Given Gan Yanyan’s personality, if she knew anything, she would definitely say something. Since she hadn’t, it must mean she didn’t know a thing.
They all took a nap.
At two in the afternoon, everyone gathered outside. The afternoon’s training was much the same as the morning.
Luo Yixia was much more well-behaved this time, simply standing in line as one of the group.
Song Chengyi glanced over several times, finally relaxing when he saw her quietly standing at the side.
“Chengyi, how many times is that now you’ve looked in that direction?” Yu Bin asked as Song Chengyi withdrew his gaze.
Song Chengyi merely grunted in response, not saying anything.
When Instructor Song walked away to check on something else, Yu Bin continued, “You’re not serious, are you? You like her?”
Song Chengyi finally lifted his eyes, “Serious about what?”
“You really like Luo Yixia, don’t you?”
“Mm.” Song Chengyi couldn’t help but glance over again.
“Incredible,” Yu Bin muttered under his breath.
Song Chengyi watched her as she stood quietly, talking softly to the person beside her, a gentle smile on her face.
When dismissal finally came, everyone went to rest.
Gan Yanyan was so exhausted she could hardly breathe. “If I’d known, I’d have taken a fall too. I’m dead tired.”
Luo Yixia just kept smiling.
“For you,” a voice suddenly sounded above them.
Both girls looked up at the same time.
Chen Nan was holding out a bottle of water to Luo Yixia.
Luo Yixia glanced at Gan Yanyan, unsure what was going on.
Of course, Gan Yanyan understood. With her experience, she knew—Song Chengyi now had a rival.
But she preferred Song Chengyi anyway, so she reached out and took the water from Chen Nan.
“Thank you, senior! I was parched,” she said with a bright smile.
“You’re… you’re welcome…” Chen Nan was clearly embarrassed.
He had meant to give the water to Luo Yixia, but who could have guessed Gan Yanyan would intercept it?
It always felt as if Gan Yanyan was out to get him. Every time he tried to show his favor to Luo Yixia, this girl intervened.
Luo Yixia lowered her head. If she didn’t understand by now, she’d be a fool. After all, someone had liked Song Chengyi for so long.
What puzzled her was why Chen Nan seemed interested in her.
Song Chengyi had seen all of this unfold from a distance.
He pressed his lips together, his thoughts unreadable.
Ever since Luo Yixia realized Chen Nan’s intentions, she began to avoid him.
Yu Bin nudged Song Chengyi’s arm with a grin, “Looks like you’ve got competition.”
Song Chengyi didn’t even have to look; he knew Chen Nan must have gone over to Luo Yixia again.
“Luo, how’s your leg? Do you need me to take a look? I’ve studied medicine for years as well,” Chen Nan suddenly appeared at Luo Yixia’s side.
Luo Yixia, sitting and rubbing her knee, paused awkwardly.
“Thank you, senior, but I’m fine,” she replied with a strained smile.
“Senior, we’re all medical students. We can handle a little scrape like this ourselves,” Gan Yanyan said, sitting beside Luo Yixia.
She really couldn’t leave her side for even a moment. The minute she left, the ‘bees’ would swarm the ‘honey’ that was Luo Yixia.
“I see…” Chen Nan, rebuffed, looked embarrassed.
He glanced meaningfully at Gan Yanyan several times. Now he was certain: this girl from Wenli really held a grudge against him.
But he couldn’t recall ever offending her. Why was she so intent on thwarting him?
“Hahaha, did you see Chen Nan’s face? If I were him, I’d die of embarrassment. Gan Yanyan’s really something,” Yu Bin laughed.
Song Chengyi didn’t laugh, but he was clearly in a good mood. It seemed telling Gan Yanyan was the right move.
“But isn’t it a bit immoral of Gan Yanyan to break up other people’s chances? What if they actually liked each other?” Yu Bin was cut off by a sharp look from Song Chengyi.
He wisely shut up.
“Song Chengyi, if you like her, you should go after her. Otherwise, someone might snatch her away.”
“If she’s really mine, no one can take her,” Song Chengyi replied calmly.
“Sure, sure, but if you don’t make a move, how will she know you like her? And now that Chen Nan is making such an effort to get noticed, you might really lose her,” Yu Bin continued to urge his friend.
“No need.”
“Fine, fine, I’ll stop. You’re Song Chengyi, after all. Who could possibly compete with you?” Yu Bin’s words were exaggerated, but not without reason.
If Song Chengyi really got a girlfriend, half the girls at their university would be heartbroken.
Lately, thanks to the training, there were fewer girls chasing after him. Before, Song Chengyi had been bombarded with love letters.
At dinnertime, Luo Yixia decided to shower instead of eating in the cafeteria—otherwise, with the crowd, she’d be waiting forever.
Gan Yanyan went to the cafeteria alone.
Everyone else already had company; Lin Ya’s table was full.
“Come sit here, there’s a free seat,” Chen Nan suddenly appeared.
Gan Yanyan looked around and, seeing no other empty spots, sat opposite him.
“Why are you alone? Where’s Luo?” Chen Nan asked casually.
Gan Yanyan took a bite, knowing full well he was just fishing for information about Xiaxia.
“She went to shower.”
“I see. Do you want anything else to eat? I can get it for you,” Chen Nan offered.
“I have enough. Can’t eat too much at night—still need to lose weight,” Gan Yanyan refused flatly. There was no way she’d let herself be bribed.
She was determined to support Luo Yixia and Song Chengyi.
“Heh, did I offend you somehow?” Chen Nan hesitated before asking.
“Hm?” Gan Yanyan didn’t quite get his meaning. “No, not at all.”
“That’s good,” Chen Nan smiled. “Well… I really like Luo Yixia. Could you help me?”
“You like Xiaxia? So that bottle of water this afternoon was for her?” Gan Yanyan feigned surprise.
“That’s right.”
“I was so thirsty, I didn’t realize—sorry, senior, really, I’m so embarrassed,” Gan Yanyan apologized, though inwardly she sneered. Let’s see who outsmarts whom.
“It’s alright, it’s alright. I just hope you can help me in the future. I haven’t had a chance yet—could you give me her number so I can add her on WeChat?” Seeing her so sincere, Chen Nan thought he’d been imagining things and hoped she might help him win over Luo Yixia.
Gan Yanyan pretended to search her pockets. “Sorry, senior, I didn’t bring my phone.”
“That’s fine. How about I add you on WeChat, and then you can send me Luo’s contact later?” Chen Nan pulled out his phone.
“Senior, I just changed my number and WeChat recently, so I don’t really remember the new ones yet,” Gan Yanyan sighed, her face full of regret.
Chen Nan’s hand trembled slightly—what were the odds?
He managed a smile. “No problem. I’ll just ask Luo myself next time.”
“Xiaxia’s a little shy and might not really understand these things. But good luck, senior!” Gan Yanyan beamed.
“Thanks, I’ll do my best,” Chen Nan said, believing she genuinely wished him well.
“But senior, there’s something I think you should know,” Gan Yanyan said hesitantly, making Chen Nan a little nervous.
“What is it?”
“Our Xiaxia already likes someone,” Gan Yanyan said, eating another bite.
Chen Nan looked at her sharply.
“The person she likes is very outstanding, and she’s liked him for a long time. I don’t know if you still have a chance,” Gan Yanyan said sympathetically.
“Who is it?” Chen Nan asked warily.
“You know him too, senior. After all, there’s only one person that exceptional at our university,” Gan Yanyan replied vaguely, but Chen Nan instantly understood she meant Song Chengyi.
Chen Nan lowered his head, feeling complicated, lost in thought.
“Senior, I’m done eating. I’ll go now,” Gan Yanyan said cheerfully, carrying her tray away.
Chen Nan sat there, deep in thought. How could Luo Yixia like Song Chengyi? The two of them…
All sorts of memories flashed through his mind—scenes of the two together.
No wonder Song Chengyi was especially concerned about her, no wonder he had gone out to look for her when she was lost.
