Chapter 120: Ingot’s Father Dies
“Not a chance. I’m not the kind of woman who makes a living off her looks. I think I’m perfectly fine the way I am.” Song Ziyue curled her lip disdainfully. Who did she think she was? She relied on her strength!
“Then... all right.” Ling Tian was surprised by her answer, but after thinking about it, he understood. Song Ziyue was no ordinary girl. He might as well let things take their natural course.
Song Ziyue nodded, then looked at Ling Tian with some heartache. Resting her head against his shoulder, she said, “Let’s leave tomorrow. The Jin Gang will probably be busy for a while. We’ll go kill Zhang Dalin, and preferably Zhang Shuai as well. Then the Northeast Gang will basically fall apart.”
Over the past few days, Song Ziyue had truly developed something of a taste for killing.
“Yue’er, I can deal with Zhang Dalin and Zhang Shuai myself. Something has happened to both the Black Dragon Gang and the Jin Gang, so you’d better stay in charge of the Purple Moon Gang. Once I’ve dealt with the Northeast Gang, I still have other matters to attend to. I’ll take care of those two as quickly as possible,” Ling Tian said after a moment’s thought.
He really did have several matters to resolve. As for Dongfang Ye, he had to investigate the truth. He had promised Tingting, after all. Then there was Inukai Corporation, which he would have to visit sooner or later. Some matters from his previous life could not simply be severed at will. Besides that, there was the matter concerning Song Ziyue’s father. He had been investigated? Although it had nothing to do with him, the man would eventually be his father-in-law, after all. Ling Tian wanted to find out what had happened and see whether there was anything he could do to help.
“All right. Be careful,” Song Ziyue said. She had witnessed Ling Tian’s methods and knew that killing ordinary people would be effortless for him, so she was not particularly worried.
“The world’s handsomest man is calling! The world’s handsomest man is calling!”
Just as Ling Tian was embracing Song Ziyue and preparing to engage in a little exercise, his phone rang. When he looked at the screen, he saw that the call was from Yuanbao.
“Brother Tian, help! My father was in a car accident! He’s being resuscitated at the hospital, and Dai Jin’s father has also been arrested for economic crimes.” Yuanbao spoke with desperate urgency. After hearing him, Ling Tian could no longer remain seated.
“Which hospital is Uncle in? All right, don’t panic. I’ll be there immediately.”
Ling Tian hung up and began getting dressed.
“What happened?” Seeing how hurried he was, Song Ziyue grew tense as well and quickly started putting on her clothes. She had rarely seen Ling Tian in such a panic.
“Yue’er, something happened to my brother’s family. I have to leave now. You get some sleep and return to Jianghai City tomorrow morning.” When Ling Tian saw that Song Ziyue had gotten up too, he pressed her back onto the bed.
“No. I’m going with you. Perhaps I can help.” Song Ziyue wanted to do something for Ling Tian, so she climbed to her feet again.
Ling Tian could only give in. The two of them dressed as quickly as possible, hurried downstairs, got into the car, and sped straight toward Jianghai City.
As the car surged forward, Ling Tian knew that this was a matter of life and death, and that every second counted. A delay of only a few seconds might cost someone their life. Although his mastery of the Yin-Yang Formula was already considerable, he still could not bring the dead back to life.
Since it was nighttime, there were very few cars on the road. Ling Tian drove so fast that the vehicle seemed to fly, its speed exceeding three hundred miles per hour. Fortunately, it was a high-performance car; otherwise, it probably would have fallen apart.
In truth, Ling Tian was filled with regret. Why had he spent so many days indulging himself instead of cultivating properly? If he had advanced his Yin-Yang Formula to the Earth Stage, he would be able to fly, and he would have arrived much faster. He was already at the peak of the Profound Stage, only a step away from breaking through into the Earth Stage.
It was always only when strength was desperately needed that one realized how weak one was. If only he had worked harder earlier.
Song Ziyue did not say a word. Her face had gone deathly pale, and even her stomach was beginning to rebel, but she endured it stubbornly. Ling Tian was driving far too fast.
Yet as she looked at Ling Tian’s resolute expression and handsome features, Song Ziyue fell for him all over again. This man was willing to risk everything for his brother’s family. He was truly dependable. And for her sake, he had not hesitated to kill so many people. Ling Tian was the man she had always dreamed of.
In less than two hours, Ling Tian arrived at Jianghai First Hospital.
“Brother Tian, my father... my father is dead.” The moment Ling Tian arrived, Yuanbao threw his arms around him and burst into tears.
“What?” Ling Tian felt as though he had been struck by lightning. Had he still arrived too late? He had rushed here as quickly as possible, yet he had still been too late.
“The doctors just announced his death.” Yuanbao clung to Ling Tian and wailed uncontrollably. Yuanbao’s mother, a plump middle-aged woman, was crying just as bitterly.
Song Ziyue merely embraced Yuanbao’s mother, unsure how to comfort her. She rarely consoled others, and at a time like this, all words of comfort were pale and powerless.
Just then, Yuanbao’s father’s body was wheeled out, on its way to the morgue. His family had been allowed one last look at his face.
“Dad!”
“Your father!”
Yuanbao and his mother threw themselves upon the body, sobbing inconsolably. The doctors and nurses had witnessed countless such partings between life and death, and could only offer quiet words of comfort. Yuanbao and his mother could not contain their grief. His mother cried so hard that she nearly fainted, and Song Ziyue hurried over to support her.
Ling Tian also approached, but said nothing. Ignoring the doctors’ and nurses’ objections, he seized Yuanbao’s father’s wrist and began taking his pulse.
It was over.
Ling Tian’s heart sank. He had still been hoping for a thread of life, believing he might be able to save Yuanbao’s father. But now there was no life force left at all. It had been severed completely.
Ling Tian stood frozen, consumed by regret. Why had he not arrived sooner? Why had he not returned earlier after dealing with those matters that evening? Why had he spent so long fooling around with those girls?
Regret. Nothing but regret.
“Brother Tian, you’re a miracle doctor! You must have a way to save my father, don’t you?” Yuanbao suddenly seized Ling Tian’s arm in desperation. He had placed all his hopes in Ling Tian. He could not believe that his father had simply left him like this. His father had still called him at noon that day. How had he suddenly ended up in a car accident? It had all happened too abruptly. He could not accept it.
“Yuanbao... Uncle is already gone.” As Ling Tian spoke, tears began to fall from his eyes as well. Yuanbao was his brother, and his grief-stricken face tore at Ling Tian’s heart. The dead man was Yuanbao’s father, yet Ling Tian could do nothing but watch one of his brother’s loved ones die before him, despite possessing such formidable medical skills.
“No! This can’t be real! Ling Tian, you can bring the dead back to life! You’re the greatest miracle doctor in the world! Save my father!” Yuanbao stared at him with desperate hope. Ling Tian was his final lifeline.
“Ling Tian, didn’t you use the Yin-Yang Formula tonight to make ghosts visible? Then hurry and see whether Uncle’s spirit has gone far. Let him say goodbye to Yuanbao and Auntie,” Song Ziyue suddenly reminded him, recalling what had happened earlier that night.
“That’s right—the Yin-Yang Formula! Spirits!”
Ling Tian suddenly realized something. He immediately activated his Yin-Yang Eyes and began searching. He did not release a gloomy aura throughout the area or make the spirit visible to everyone. There were probably many ghosts in a hospital, and revealing them might frighten people to death. It was enough for him to see them first.
“Uncle!”
Ling Tian suddenly cried out. He had discovered Yuanbao’s father’s spirit standing beside Yuanbao’s mother. It had not yet departed. Since the man had only just died, the underworld agents had not yet arrived.
Thank goodness!
Ling Tian immediately became excited.
As long as he could locate the spirit, the body was still relatively intact, and the death had occurred only moments ago, he had a way to save him.
Without another word, Ling Tian sent his true energy into Yuanbao’s father’s body, repairing the damaged organs—especially the brain. Many brain cells had already died from lack of oxygen, but the greatest power of the Yin-Yang Formula was its ability to reverse death. His true energy revived those brain cells that had only recently perished.
Legend held that once cultivators reached a certain realm, they could recreate a body from nothing more than a single drop of blood. Modern medicine also spoke of cloning, though the technology was still immature. In the cultivation world, however, such legends were real.
Thus, reviving Yuanbao’s father’s body was entirely possible. Ling Tian had lost hope earlier only because he had assumed the man’s spirit had already departed and that his death was absolute. If the underworld agents had already taken the spirit away, then no amount of treatment could bring him back.
As the saying went, concern bred confusion. Ling Tian had simply lost his bearings for a moment. Now that Yuanbao’s father’s spirit was right beside him, everything would be fine as long as the body was restored. The spirit would be able to return.
The doctors and nurses were completely dumbfounded. Life was returning to Yuanbao’s father. The injuries to his internal organs were healing before their very eyes. They could not believe what they were witnessing.
Just as Ling Tian finished repairing Yuanbao’s father’s body and was about to guide the spirit back inside, the two beings he had feared most appeared.
They were Black Impermanence and White Impermanence.
If not for the mourning staffs in their hands and the tall hats on their heads, Ling Tian might not have recognized them. The two had apparently kept up with the times: one wore a white suit, the other a black suit. Both were surprisingly good-looking, though their cold, terrifying auras made people shudder.
Of course, ordinary people could not see them. Spirits could, and spirits feared them.
The two had already shackled four or five spirits, all of them belonging to people who had just died in the hospital. Now they were walking toward Yuanbao’s father as well.
Before Ling Tian could stop them, White Impermanence cast out the soul-snaring rope in his hand. It flew toward Yuanbao’s father and wrapped around him.
Ling Tian had no time to think. He grabbed the rope at once. He knew that if it truly bound Yuanbao’s father, there would be no way to save him.
“What are you?” White Impermanence roared furiously when he saw that a living man had seized his soul-snaring rope. “How can you see us? And how dare you interfere with our work?”
“This man isn’t dead. Don’t you dare act presumptuously!” Ling Tian had no interest in introducing himself. He struggled with White Impermanence, resisting with all his strength.
To be honest, he felt as though his own spirit were about to be dragged out. But extracting a soul from a living body required time—and Ling Tian was no ordinary man.
Yuanbao’s father’s spirit was dazed and confused. Meanwhile, everyone else stood frozen. They could not see Black Impermanence, White Impermanence, or the spirit. They could only stare at Ling Tian in bewilderment, unable to understand what he was doing.
“Spirit, return!”
Taking advantage of Ling Tian’s struggle with White Impermanence, Black Impermanence suddenly produced a soul-summoning banner and struck it toward Yuanbao’s father’s spirit.
