Chapter Fifty-Four: The Tasteless Thief
(1/3)
“So, what do you mean…” Mrs. Wu hesitated for a moment.
“It’s not what I mean, it’s up to you all. The brothers want you to go to the county town, as for your father and me…”
“We’ll stay in the village, and whenever we miss our grandsons, we’ll go visit you,” Old Lin interrupted his wife.
In the end, the sisters-in-law decided to follow their husbands. As for when they would leave, that was still undecided.
Lin Sanlang was the last in the family to know about it. As for his mother-in-law’s suggestion, he thought about it and decided to wait before replying.
Meng Yun didn’t hurry them either—after all, there was still time to consider, and she was still experimenting with rouge materials.
The heroic “Duck” who had won glory in battle now strutted around with great swagger. Little Black followed behind, mimicking every move, chest out and steps brisk, looking every bit the loyal sidekick.
But their flamboyance ended with them being caught!
Ever since Ma Cuicui married into the neighboring village, Meng Xuan could finally walk proudly into the Lin family’s courtyard. At first, nothing seemed amiss.
Lately, Meng Xuan kept feeling a pair of eyes watching them in the yard.
Seeing the fat dog running all over the place and showing off, Meng Xuan wondered if raising such creatures was of any use.
Little Black…who said that!
That night, Meng Xuan stayed at the Lin house. Meng Yun tidied up Fu Bao’s side room for him.
In the middle of the night, Meng Xuan heard faint footsteps—a sound so soft it was almost inaudible.

This person was highly skilled in martial arts, but a bit clumsy. Listening to the “duck” and dog barking outside, Meng Xuan’s mouth twitched. Without thinking, he rushed out.
The man in black, realizing the game was up, grabbed the duck in his left hand and the dog in his right, picked up Duck and Little Black by their hind legs, and swiftly climbed the wall to escape, leaving only their pitiful cries echoing through the night.
Meng Xuan “….”
The Lin family “….”
As for Fu Bao, sleeping soundly, he had no idea that their dog and duck had been taken by a thief!
Meng Xuan comforted his sister and then chased after the black-clad figure.
“What happened?” Old Mrs. Lin, hearing the commotion, came out with an oil lamp. Mrs. Li and Mrs. Wu also peered out the door.
“Mother, it’s fine, please go back inside and rest, don’t catch a cold!” Lin Sanlang called out from the old house, holding the lamp.
“Just now Little Black was barking so fiercely! What’s happened?” Now, all was quiet.
“Oh, the black dog was taken by a thief, Meng Xuan went after him,” Lin Sanlang replied casually.
The daily washing was exhausting—let the thief catch him and stew him!
Old Mrs. Lin “….” Such an uncouth thief!
Once the Lin family had gone back inside, a shadow revealed a pair of sinister eyes, staring straight at the Lin family’s gate.

As for the tasteless thief, Meng Xuan lost his trail.
Meng Xuan chased him to the foot of Little Mountain but couldn’t find any trace of the man. He only saw Little Black and Duck tied up and hung from a tree, crying miserably.
Meng Xuan “….” Quite a feat of acrobatics??
After rescuing the two little ones, Meng Xuan searched around but found no clues.
“Not good, could this be a trap?” Meng Xuan grabbed one in each hand and hurried back.
Seeing the peaceful Lin family courtyard, Meng Xuan, holding the duck and dog, “….” These people sure have nerves of steel!
The next day, Old Mrs. Lin held a family meeting on safety precautions, reflecting deeply on the theft of the dog and cat the night before.
The two little ones, freshly washed by Lin Sanlang, were placed on Fu Bao’s tiny bed for comfort.
The little ginseng spirit knew exactly who the culprit was—the relentless hunter chasing him!
That scoundrel watched him every day! How annoying!
