Chapter 124

“What are you doing? And who are these people?” Mr. Jingyuan’s disciples were furious. Never before had anyone dared come here and cause such a scene.
“I heard the academy is haunted. Miss Liu hired them to drive out the ghosts,” Student A said.
“Haunted? Really?” Student B asked in astonishment.
“I don’t know. I’ve heard people mention it before, but I thought it was just malicious slander,” Student A replied thoughtfully, stroking his chin.
“Stop this at once! This is Mr. Jingyuan’s academy. How dare you show such disrespect?” Zifeng, Mr. Jingyuan’s youngest disciple, shouted angrily. Their master had yet to rise. If he woke and saw this mess, he would surely be furious.
When Lucky Treasure arrived, the hot-tempered Zifeng was in the middle of an argument with the impressive-looking Daoist. Of course, it was only a war of words.
“What’s going on?” Miss Chen squeezed her way inside and asked in confusion when she saw the scene.
“I don’t know,” Lucky Treasure said, poking her head out from behind the others.
“Hmph. Wherever evil lurks, this Daoist will exterminate it for the people,” the Daoist said stubbornly. He clearly had no intention of leaving—what could they do about it? Miss Liu had promised him a handsome sum if he handled the matter properly.
“You…” Zifeng was nearly beside himself with rage at the unyielding Daoist.
“What is the meaning of this?”
A solemn voice rang out, interrupting the farce. Everyone turned and saw that Mr. Jingyuan had arrived.
After paying their respects, they began explaining the situation to him.
“You claim that the academy is haunted? What utter nonsense!” one of the instructors shouted.
“I never make reckless claims without evidence,” the Daoist replied.
“Then what evidence do you have?”
The Daoist did not answer. Instead, he glanced toward the crowd, pointed at Lucky Treasure, and said, “This young lady has a gloomy complexion and is enveloped in baleful energy. I fear she has already encountered something ominous.”
Lucky Treasure: “...?”

“Silence! What nonsense! This young lady is a colleague of ours. How dare you slander her here?”
A woman’s voice rang out, and everyone’s expressions grew complicated. To their surprise, it was Liu Fei’er rebuking the Daoist.
“Hmph. Then allow me to ask: Did this young lady leave her room yesterday during the hour of the Boar?”
The Daoist spoke arrogantly.
Lucky Treasure puffed out her cheeks, thinking, How did you know?
“Oh, hurry up and answer him. That will prove your innocence,” Liu Fei’er cut in before Lucky Treasure could speak.
“What does it have to do with you?” Miss Chen glared at Liu Fei’er.
Everyone’s eyes turned toward Lucky Treasure.
“Exactly,” Lucky Treasure said, blinking.
“Hmph. You went to the hot spring and saw the ghost of someone who had drowned,” the Daoist said, fixing his gaze on her.
“Lin Cenbao, you really saw a ghost? Is this place truly haunted?” Liu Fei’er could never resist adding her own comment.
“Of course not!” Lucky Treasure snapped angrily.
“You didn’t? Perhaps you simply don’t dare admit it,” Liu Fei’er said in a strangely insinuating tone.
“What would I have to be afraid of admitting?”
“Then why are you so angry? Feeling guilty?”
“Enough, Liu Fei’er. Didn’t you hear Lin Cenbao say she saw nothing? Why do I feel as though you’re forcing your colleague to confess to something?” Gu Li emerged from the crowd and spoke up.
“That’s right. Why are you speaking with such certainty? Lin Cenbao already said she saw nothing, yet you keep pressuring her to admit otherwise,” someone in the crowd added, sensing that something was off.
Liu Fei’er’s face stiffened. No, she couldn’t be too hasty.
“I was only concerned about my colleague. Since she didn’t see anything, I’ll say no more,” Liu Fei’er said, pouting.

“Hmph, very well. Then this Daoist shall personally perform a ritual and open your eyes to the truth.”
The impressive-looking Daoist ignored Mr. Jingyuan’s livid expression and ordered his disciples to prepare the ritual.
“Instructor, this…” Several of Mr. Jingyuan’s disciples did not know what to do.
“Heh. Anyone who dares cause trouble here clearly has no wish to remain in this world. Throw them all out!” Mr. Jingyuan thundered.
No sooner had he spoken than several burly yet agile men charged inside.
Everyone watched helplessly as the old Daoist was hoisted into the air and carried outside before being thrown out.
Bang!
The main doors slammed shut, and the academy instantly fell silent.
Mr. Jingyuan then reprimanded his own disciples. The instructors of the Sacred Academy dragged their disciples away and gave them a thorough scolding as well.
In the end, everyone was ordered to write an essay of at least ten thousand words as a warning against such behavior.
Lucky Treasure: This is worse than death.
Miss Chen: I want to go home.
The troublemaker, Liu Fei’er: Damn it. I tried to steal a chicken and ended up losing the rice.
That night, the academy was filled with wails and howls.
No one noticed a figure slipping out of the academy.
“Master, is this… really reliable?”
A boy dressed as a young acolyte looked doubtfully at the old Daoist, who was bent over and fiddling with something on the ground.
