Chapter Four: The Agent

Li Chuxi was quite satisfied with the fact that her household registration had already been transferred out. Having the registration in hand made many things much easier.
“Host, you said that otherworldly soul—wasn’t she a concubine’s daughter in the Minister’s residence?” Lingling Yao’s puzzled voice echoed in her mind. “How come she doesn’t have any scheming at all?”
Li Chuxi scoffed. “Do you really think that high-ranking noble families are rife with brutal household struggles? In ancient times, the distinction between legitimate and concubine-born daughters was very strict. Only the legitimate daughters were considered the true owners of the household; concubine daughters were no better than servants.”
“Those with high status and power wouldn’t dare pit favored concubines against wives. If they did, they would ruin their own futures. No one is foolish enough to do that.”
“Moreover, the matron of the Minister’s residence was a legitimate daughter personally groomed in such a prestigious household—her methods were formidable. A concubine’s daughter had little experience and even less knowledge of household politics.”
Lingling Yao fell silent instantly.
Just then, a harsh ringtone pierced the air.
Li Chuxi picked up her phone and saw the name displayed on the screen: Sister Yao Ling.
A cold glint flashed in Li Chuxi’s eyes as she answered the call. Before she could speak, a furious voice blared from the other end.
“Li Chuxi, where on earth have you disappeared to? Have you grown wings? Didn’t I already tell you that tonight you have dinner with Director Wang and the others? Why aren’t you coming?”
“No.” Li Chuxi’s voice was icy and indifferent.

Her frost-cold tone stunned the person on the other end for a moment, but she quickly regained composure, and her anger only intensified.
“Li Chuxi, do you know who you’re talking to? I’m telling you, if you don’t come today, I will report you to the company and have you blacklisted immediately.”
“Oh.” Li Chuxi replied nonchalantly.
Yao Ling on the other side was furious beyond measure and seemed about to say more, but Li Chuxi simply hung up.
After ending the call, a chill filled Li Chuxi’s eyes.
She had long known who this Sister Yao Ling was from her memories. To be exact, Yao Ling was now her manager. After all, her contract with the company had not yet expired.
Though Yao Ling was her manager, she was by no means a good person. Yao Ling had a notorious reputation in the entertainment industry, largely due to her own machinations.
Almost every scandal Li Chuxi was involved in had been exacerbated by Yao Ling’s scheming. Otherwise, even without any real talent, Li Chuxi’s beauty alone would have kept her reputation decent in this appearance-driven world.
Yao Ling’s purpose was simple: to promote another girl in the group, Liu Shangshang.
Her aim was to dissolve the group and focus all resources on Liu Shangshang.
That otherworldly soul failed to perceive Yao Ling’s true intentions and usually fawned over her. But the more she tried to please Yao Ling, the more disdainful Yao Ling became.

“Host, you just hung up like that—won’t that old witch come after you?” Lingling Yao’s voice sounded again. “That old witch is no good.”
“Even if I hadn’t taken that call, do you think she wouldn’t cause me trouble?” Li Chuxi’s lips curled into a sardonic smile. “She’s already trying to pin the blame for the group’s dissolution on me!”
“That old witch really is despicable,” Lingling Yao said indignantly. “Host, we should terminate the contract with that lousy company immediately.”
“No need.” Li Chuxi shook her head. “That would be a waste of money.”
Back when she completed missions in those small worlds, she had acquired many valuable items. Now, those treasures had come with her.
In fact, even if she dared nothing else, she could live a life of extravagance for the rest of her days. The total assets of the entire Li family combined didn’t even amount to a thousandth of the valuables stored in her system space.
