The morning in City A was as busy as ever. Sunlight filtered through the gaps between towering buildings, casting patterns on the streets below and highlighting the hurried footsteps of the crowd. Xu Yunchuan stood before the headquarters of the Shen Corporation, gazing up at the skyscraper that symbolized immense wealth and power.

“Shen Corporation, truly a giant,” he murmured softly, straightening the resume in his hand as he calmed the nerves within him.

According to the elder’s instructions, today he was to attend the recruitment interview at Shen Corporation. On the surface, he was just an ordinary job seeker, but in truth, he carried a secret mission.

“Xu Yunchuan, remember, your task is singular—to get close to the core of the Shen family and obtain the information I require.” The elder’s words echoed in his mind.

“Get close to the core? How could someone like me possibly do that?” Xu Yunchuan smiled bitterly, yet he knew there was no turning back.

Breaking Through the Interview

Upon entering the building, Xu Yunchuan was led to a spacious conference room where a dozen other candidates were already seated. Each was impeccably dressed, exuding an air of refinement that sharply contrasted with his plain shirt, marking him as an outsider.

“Good day, everyone. I am the manager of the Human Resources Department at Shen Corporation. Today’s interview will consist of two rounds: the first is a written test, followed by a leaderless group discussion,” announced a middle-aged man in a suit, his tone low and authoritative as he entered the room.

The written test comprised logic puzzles and case analysis. Xu Yunchuan scanned the paper swiftly, a spark of confidence shining in his eyes. These questions were not difficult for him—after all, during university he was the star debater of his team.

In less than half an hour, he completed the entire test and even double-checked his answers. Setting down his pen, he noticed many others still furiously scribbling.

“Looks like the first round is no problem,” he thought quietly.

The second round—the leaderless group discussion—proved more complex. The topic was a business simulation case, requiring team members to collaboratively devise a solution and present it.

Throughout the discussion, Xu Yunchuan refrained from rushing to the forefront. Instead, he observed each participant’s contributions carefully. He noticed a man in a blue suit constantly trying to dominate, yet ignoring crucial data analysis; meanwhile, a long-haired young woman appeared overly cautious, hesitant to voice a clear opinion.

“The opportunity has come,” Xu Yunchuan judged inwardly, then offered his perspective at the right moment.

“I believe our solution should focus more on customer needs rather than merely maximizing profits,” he said quietly but firmly, quickly drawing everyone’s attention.

In the ensuing discussion, he skillfully guided the team toward a consensus, neither overshadowing others nor failing to demonstrate his logic and leadership.

When the results were announced, Xu Yunchuan advanced to the next round without surprise.

An Unexpected Encounter

After the interview, Xu Yunchuan waited in the building’s lounge to receive his notification. As he looked down at his phone, the sharp click of high heels caught his attention.

“Crash!” The sound of something breaking was followed by coffee spilling across the floor.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to!” a clear female voice said.

Xu Yunchuan looked up to see a young woman in a white professional suit standing before him, flustered as she tried to gather her scattered documents. Her coffee cup lay shattered, and the papers were stained with the dark liquid.

“It’s alright, let me help you,” he said, standing quickly and handing her some tissues.

The woman glanced up, offering an embarrassed smile. “Thank you.”

Her features were delicate and refined, with a cool elegance that marked her apart from ordinary employees. Xu Yunchuan sensed there was more to her than met the eye.

“Are you here for the interview too?” she asked casually.

“Yes,” Xu Yunchuan nodded. “But just an entry-level position. Probably hard to get in.”

She smiled but said no more. After tidying her documents, she turned and left.

Watching her retreating figure, Xu Yunchuan pondered, “Who is she?”

Behind the Recruitment

A few days later, Xu Yunchuan received his job offer. He was assigned to the Marketing Department at Shen Corporation, as a junior staff member.

“Looks like the elder was right; he really knew how to get me into Shen Corporation,” Xu Yunchuan mused, though his vigilance deepened. He understood this job was far from simple.

On his first day at work, he saw the poised woman again in the office.

“It’s her?” Xu Yunchuan was surprised. Even more shocking was when she stood inside the executive conference room, commanding the respect of everyone present.

“Let me introduce you: this is Shen Qingwan, the eldest daughter of the Shen family and our Vice President at Shen Corporation,” the Marketing Department manager announced to the group.

Xu Yunchuan’s mind thundered. He had never imagined that the woman he had unexpectedly assisted was one of the core figures of the Shen family.

“Shen Qingwan…” he whispered the name, his emotions swirling.

The Trial of the Elite

In the days that followed, Xu Yunchuan gradually adapted to his role at Shen Corporation, yet he realized the company was not as glamorous as it seemed.

Factional struggles ran deep within the Marketing Department. Superiors bossed subordinates around, while colleagues schemed against each other.

During one meeting, he proposed an innovative plan, only to be publicly dismissed by the department head, who sneered behind his back, calling him a “rookie who doesn’t know the rules.”

Suppressing his anger, Xu Yunchuan said nothing. Instead, he spent his off-hours refining the proposal. By chance, he managed to deliver the document directly to Shen Qingwan.

The next day, the plan was approved and immediately became a key project for the Marketing Department.

“Mr. Shen highly appreciates your idea,” the manager praised Xu Yunchuan by name at the company-wide meeting, his smile thin but tinged with envy and dissatisfaction.

Xu Yunchuan merely smiled faintly, silently resolving: “Now that I’m inside this ‘fortress,’ I must survive on my own terms.”
