Chapter 131: Turbulence Within the Estate, Resolve for Reform Hardens
The biting night wind could no longer disperse the hope taking root in people's hearts. Moonlight filtered through the window lattice, casting a glow upon Lin Shiya’s face and illuminating the resolute light in her eyes. As she looked around, she caught the undisguised admiration and affection in Young Master Fang’s gaze, which stirred a warmth within her.
"Lady Lin..." Young Master Fang began, his expression heavy with an unspoken burden. He stopped abruptly, his eyes filled with worry. When Lin Shiya moved to press him for an explanation, he clamped his mouth shut.
"What is it?" she asked, looking at him with confusion.
After a moment of hesitation, he finally spoke, his tone laced with unease. "Lady Lin, my father... he is planning to stop us again."
Lin Shiya’s brow furrowed. Master Fang had always been a staunch opponent of the reformists; his interference would undoubtedly stir up more turbulence on their path. She knew well that his opposition stemmed not only from his adherence to the old ways but also from his deep-seated ties to the established powers.
"Young Master Fang, what exactly has your father done?" she asked calmly, hoping to glean more information.
"He has gathered a number of officials at the estate to publicly denounce the reformists," he whispered, his voice tinged with frustration and helplessness. "He claims we are shaking the very foundations of the state and will bring about chaos."
Lin Shiya felt a surge of concern. She knew his words were intended not only to obstruct the movement but to fracture the unity of the reformists. She had to find a countermeasure quickly, or the momentum they had built would be dealt a severe blow.
"Young Master Fang, this must place a great deal of pressure on you, doesn't it?" she asked softly.
"It does, Lady Lin," he replied, nodding. "But I do not regret joining your cause."
A warmth spread through Lin Shiya. She patted his shoulder in encouragement. "I understand your heart, Young Master Fang. We cannot be swayed by these dissenting voices. We must stand united and face this together."
Scarcely had she finished speaking when a clamor erupted from the nearby estate. It was clear that Master Fang had begun his campaign. Lin Shiya stood up, took a deep breath, and looked at Young Master Fang with determination. "Let us go and see."
They moved through the night, entering the Fang estate. Inside, a crowd of officials had gathered, with Master Fang at the center, railing fiercely against the reforms. His voice echoed through the hall like a chilling wind.
"Lady Lin, so you are that top-ranking scholar? How can a mere woman understand the affairs of the state?" His words were dripping with mockery and disdain, echoed by the conservative officials around him. The atmosphere grew stifling.
Lin Shiya’s resolve only hardened. She stepped forward, her eyes flashing with defiance. "Master Fang, I have heard your words," she said, her voice cool and sharp as a blade, piercing the tension in the room. "But have you considered that our intent is to ensure a better life for the people?"
She scanned the faces of everyone present, declaring without a word that no matter how difficult the road ahead, she would not retreat. As Master Fang prepared to lash out, Lin Shiya turned to the crowd and unfurled her proposal. "Gentlemen, this is the concrete plan we have devised for the welfare of the people..." The document she held seemed to shine like a beacon in the dim hall.
The proposal clearly outlined various measures, from tax relief to irrigation projects, from the advancement of education to agricultural support—each directly tied to the people's well-being. Some officials, previously hesitant, found themselves drawn to the substance of the document and began to whisper among themselves.
"This... the contents of this proposal are indeed beneficial to the people," one official murmured.
"Indeed," another agreed. "If this could truly be implemented, the lives of the people would surely improve."
Seeing the shift in the officials' attitudes, Master Fang panicked. He had expected his call to action to rally them, not for Lin Shiya’s plan to render his opposition so impotent.
Advisor Yuan, watching from the shadows, saw the tide turning and cast a cold, venomous look at Master Fang. He crept up to him and whispered, "Master, this woman is clearly trying to seize power! She is using your son to bewitch the masses! You must not be deceived by her!"
The advisor’s words coiled like a serpent in Master Fang’s ear. Already resentful, the master was now consumed by rage. He stood abruptly and pointed a trembling finger at Lin Shiya. "You! You deceitful woman! You are trying to ruin the Fang family! Someone, throw her out!"
The tension in the hall reached a breaking point. Even those moved by the proposal shrank back in fear of his outburst. Yet, Lin Shiya did not retreat. She looked at Master Fang and said calmly, "Master Fang, I understand your concerns, but reform is the trend of the times. We cannot remain stagnant and hide behind old traditions."
"I don't care about trends!" he roared. "I said, get out!"
Suddenly, a figure stepped in front of Lin Shiya. "Father! You cannot do this!"
Young Master Fang stood as a bulwark before her, slight of frame but as immovable as a mountain. He looked his father in the eye. "Father, I know you fear that reform will bring instability, but have you considered that our court is already rotting and the people are suffering? If we do not change, we will surely perish! Lady Lin’s proposal is well-considered and intended for the people’s welfare. I implore you, do not obstruct us anymore!"
Trembling with fury, Master Fang shouted, "Rebellious son! You defy your own father for the sake of an outsider! Do you have no respect for me?"
Young Master Fang inhaled deeply, his tone sorrowful but firm. "Father, I am not being unfilial; I simply cannot bear to watch the Great Yan fall into decline. Reform is inevitable. I believe in Lady Lin, and I believe that reform will bring new hope!" His voice rang out, resonant and clear, touching everyone present.
Those who had been wavering were moved by his sincerity and his willingness to take a stand. They began to question whether Master Fang’s stubbornness was truly right, and whether reform was as dangerous as he claimed.
Lin Shiya looked at Young Master Fang with gratitude. She had not expected him to stand so firmly by her side at such a critical moment. She knew he did so not just for her, but for the future of the Great Yan. He turned to her, his gaze tender and steady, a slight smile playing on his lips as if to tell her not to fear, for he would always be there. In the tense atmosphere, this warmth was profound, and a new depth of bond formed between them.
The clamor in the hall faded, all eyes fixed on the pair. Master Fang, seeing his son’s unwavering gaze and hearing the murmurs of the officials, felt his anger wane, replaced by a sense of bewilderment. He began to realize that perhaps his stubbornness had been misplaced.
Advisor Yuan, sensing the shift, panicked. "Master, don't hesitate! The boy is bewitched by that woman, you must—"
"Enough!" Master Fang interrupted, his voice raspy. He turned to Lin Shiya, his expression complex. After a long silence, he said, "Lady Lin, may I see your proposal?"
Lin Shiya nodded slightly and handed it to him. As he read, the furrows in his brow smoothed, replaced by contemplation. The surrounding officials crowded around to see the contents for themselves.
Under the moonlight, the neatly written characters seemed to glow, reflecting the hopeful gazes of those gathered. The document detailed the necessity and feasibility of the reforms, item by item.
"This... this really is beneficial," a voice whispered.
More and more officials began to voice their support, their consensus growing into a powerful force that broke down the last of Master Fang’s defenses. As he looked at the clear, logical text and heard the growing approval, his last doubts vanished.
"Lady Lin," Master Fang began, but before he could continue, a burst of applause erupted. More officials stepped forward, declaring their desire to join the reformist cause for the sake of the Great Yan.
Lin Shiya watched, filled with relief and excitement. The seeds of reform had been sown and were beginning to sprout.
As the night deepened, the atmosphere in the hall grew vibrant. The officials gathered around Lin Shiya to discuss the plans, their faces alight with hope. Looking at their spirited expressions, Lin Shiya felt a surge of confidence.
However, a cold gaze remained fixed on her from the darkness. Advisor Yuan, watching the reformists grow in strength, was consumed by hatred. "Lin Shiya, do you think you have won?" he whispered, his eyes gleaming with malice. "The game has only just begun. Who will have the last laugh is yet to be seen."
He slipped out of the estate and vanished into the night.
Lin Shiya, sensing the undercurrents, felt her gaze sharpen and a flicker of unease stir within her. "Gentlemen," she said, looking around with resolve, "though we have made progress, the road ahead is long and arduous. We must remain cautious and united if we are to achieve ultimate victory." Her voice echoed like a clarion call, inspiring her allies and signaling the turbulent changes yet to come.
Turning to Young Master Fang, she said firmly, "We must act immediately."
