Chapter 16: Yu Hui's "Transformation"
Just as everyone thought this segment was about to end, Yu Hui suddenly interrupted impatiently, “Hey, you’re all being too petty. President Zhang is in big business—don’t you think he should have a broader perspective? Brother Xu is actively trying to help solve their problems too.”
Huang Lingling looked over in disbelief, “Huh???”
Yu Hui snorted, “What’s with the ‘huh’? Do you really think I’m such a petty person? That song Brother Xu sang did highlight my blind spots. I wasn’t speaking earlier because I was reflecting. If even Brother Xu can see my faults, then I must have indeed fallen short. But I don’t feel that I don’t love you. It only means I have serious issues in my actions and words. Now that I’ve noticed, I’ll try to fix them. If I can’t change, then maybe we’ll have to part.”
Yu Hui rarely spoke, but when he did, it was jaw-dropping.
Pan Yun and Chen Linye were stunned. Just moments ago, they had been overwhelmed by Xu Shujian’s song—was anyone going to comfort him? And now Yu Hui was already rationalizing himself? Had Xu Shujian really talked to him beforehand and given him guidance?
Was Yu Hui really such a magnanimous man? Was Xu Shujian that clever? After a song that completely laid Yu Hui bare, he still gave him a sweet balm to digest it himself?
What was Yu Hui thinking? He was trying to save himself. He hadn’t really been paying attention to the conflict between Zhang Qidong and Lin Xiaoxian; he was preoccupied with his own matters.
Anyone brave enough to come on this show was either an emotional scatterbrain or extremely rational.
Yu Hui was sure he wasn’t the former. Just as Xu Shujian guessed, Yu Hui came prepared for the consequences. He even suspected subconsciously that he might not truly love Huang Lingling anymore.
Huang Lingling used to be easy to appease, but not anymore. Their marriage was indeed on the verge of collapse.
At first, Yu Hui planned to go all out—openly exposing his faults so everyone could see what Huang Lingling had endured. His career was mediocre at best; he had nothing to lose, so why not take a gamble?
What if Huang Lingling really became a big internet celebrity?
Yu Hui thought this plan was feasible. Since she was hard to soothe, he could use the show to make amends. It was all his fault, but he was willing to be her stepping stone. Wouldn’t that move her? Could she still doubt his love?
But then, out of nowhere, Xu Shujian suddenly sang a song that struck straight to Huang Lingling’s heart.
Yu Hui felt a flicker of fear—what if, even after revealing his intentions, she still wouldn’t turn back? Would he become a complete fool for love?
He struggled with this: Should he go all in with a clear conscience and be that fool for love, or should he seek some other way to save himself?
He had to choose something; otherwise, he couldn’t continue on the show.
After much thought, he decided to pursue both paths.
First, admit his mistakes—admitting fault costs nothing. Then genuinely think about how to change. And above all, don’t antagonize Xu Shujian—this guy was unpredictable. Yu Hui even suspected he was pretending to be meek while hiding a deep mind.
Yu Hui had once thought Xu Shujian was the weaker party in his marriage with President Song, always alone in an empty house.
But now it seemed otherwise—this guy was just waiting for the right moment.
The biggest beneficiary of this show might very well be Xu Shujian himself. His song revealed not only talent, something Yu Hui deeply felt.
On one hand, he had to correct his attitude and see if he could still hold onto Huang Lingling; on the other hand, he couldn’t offend Xu Shujian and might have to flatter him a bit. If the production team was fully backing Xu Shujian, standing against him might just make Yu Hui the clown.
Most importantly, Xu Shujian seemed to be extending goodwill toward him—otherwise, why would he want to talk privately?
Thinking this, Yu Hui looked at Xu Shujian, wanting to confirm.
“Brother Xu, what was the name of that song you just sang?”
Xu Shujian blinked, unsure of what Yu Hui was up to. It seemed like he suddenly lost all sense of pride and openly showed vulnerability. He cautiously replied, “That... it was too rushed. I haven’t decided yet.”
Yu Hui’s expression turned grave. He said seriously, “I appreciate it. You cared so much about Lingling and me in such a short time. If I don’t wise up and change, then I really would be inhumane.”
Perhaps noticing the shocked looks around, Yu Hui emphasized, “I’m serious. I’m also a songwriter. I know how much thought goes into composing something like this. You can ask Brother Ye—so many people long for a song of this quality and can’t get one. I’m not ungrateful. How about we call it ‘He Doesn’t Love Me’? I believe this will be an important song in my life. Like I said before, I feel I love her, but that love hasn’t been shown in my actions. This is a reminder, a mirror.”
Chen Linye nodded in agreement, clearly resonating with Yu Hui’s words.
“We rock musicians tend to be straightforward. I don’t know if you’ve met other rock artists, but for me, unless I’m blind to my own faults, once I see them, I accept the consequences immediately.”
Yu Hui spoke seriously and sincerely, but Xu Shujian still harbored some reservations about him.
When Yu Hui was sarcastic, Xu Shujian thought it was manageable with some guidance. But seeing him like this now made him a little apprehensive. “You decide,” Xu Shujian said cautiously.
Xu Shujian’s attitude actually brightened Yu Hui’s eyes. Clearly, Xu Shujian was showing goodwill or genuinely trying to soothe him.
In Yu Hui’s world, who serious would come on a show like this?
Xu Shujian had said something similar earlier—wasn’t this his comeback platform?
This kind of open-hearted exchange was itself a gesture of sincerity.
Now that Xu Shujian had effectively handed him the “naming rights” of that song, wasn’t that giving him a way out?
Yu Hui even had the strange feeling that Brother Xu was really kind to him. How silly he had been to look down on him at first!
No wonder after so many years in music, he hadn’t made any real achievements.
Indeed, coming from the underground band scene was the right choice; the outside world was truly dazzling.
At first, Yu Hui still hesitated and worried, but as he spoke, he increasingly felt he was growing and improving in the right direction. This feeling was not as unbearable as he had imagined.
Pan Yun immediately gave Yu Hui a thumbs up, “Hey! I suddenly realize Brother Hui is quite the man.”
Yu Hui smiled proudly, “Right? Brother Xu said the same.”
Song Yue noticed Xu Shujian deep in thought and quietly approached him, whispering in his ear, “This guy is very calculating.”
Xu Shujian nodded slightly. That was the only explanation. But could such a change be sincere and consistent? If not, it would be just a poor imitation.
Xu Shujian inwardly grumbled, not many normal people would appear here after all.
As they chatted and laughed, the LCD screen began cycling through photos—Pan Yun and Chen Linye’s picture appeared.
It was taken on a grassy field. Pan Yun and Chen Linye stood apart, with a pile of clothes and other items stacked between them.
This photo looked relatively normal. Xu Shujian’s first thought was, wasn’t this just some everyday domestic quarrel?
Among the four couples on the show, Xu Shujian reckoned Pan Yun and Chen Linye had the smallest, most normal problems. Compared to the others, their issues hardly counted as conflict.
Xu Shujian felt he could finally relax a bit. Dealing with these scheming people was really exhausting.
