Chapter 81: I Will Not Accept Her Bone Marrow
Zhao Fuhe followed the numbers beside the ward doors, searching her way through. When Wen Zhixia saw her, she showed not the slightest hint of surprise. If Zhao Fuhe hadn’t come to find her, that would have been odd.
“Senior Wen, I heard you’re ill, so I came to visit you,” Zhao Fuhe said with a smile.
She claimed to visit, but her smile lacked sincerity, her hands were empty, and even the servant nearby sensed something strange.
Wen Zhixia made no comment, for she’d already guessed Zhao Fuhe’s purpose in coming. Her gaze swept indifferently over Zhao Fuhe’s face. “I thought you’d already know. After all... the reason for your existence, shouldn’t you be most aware of it?”
Her existence...
Her existence was solely to provide Wen Zhixia with bone marrow.
Gu Pingsheng had treated her differently, chosen her from the start, all because of Wen Zhixia.
The first time Zhao Fuhe learned, from Gu Pingsheng’s conversation with the doctor, why she’d been chosen, she couldn’t accept it. From that moment, she no longer chose to cower in the shadows as a hidden mistress.
Yet she never imagined that her first confrontation with Wen Zhixia would cost her her own child.
She miscarried, losing the child she’d seen as her safeguard, while Wen Zhixia, the culprit, faced no blame. Zhao Fuhe only wanted an explanation, but Gu Pingsheng still stood by Wen Zhixia’s side.
Was it only because Wen Zhixia was luckier, and knew him earlier?
Zhao Fuhe took a deep breath, then suddenly laughed. “You’re right, it was like that at first. But do you know what happened afterward, Senior?”
With malice, Zhao Fuhe drew closer to Wen Zhixia. “Afterwards, we slept together. Not just once. Otherwise, how do you think I got pregnant? Even if he was concerned about your illness at first, how can you be sure he didn’t fall for me later?
Oh, and you probably don’t know: before me, he had other women. But every time, those women tried to make themselves known in front of you and were driven away. With me, he never had that thought. This proves that I hold a place in his heart. You only knew him first, and he’s someone who cherishes old ties.”
Wen Zhixia raised her brows. “Are you finished?”
Zhao Fuhe watched her calm, unruffled demeanor, hoping to glimpse collapse or pain, but everything remained as usual.
Wen Zhixia lifted her hand. “Aunt Zhao, give it to me.”
Aunt Zhao, who had been standing by the restroom door, hurried forward. As Zhao Fuhe turned, she was met with a basin of cold water splashed right in her face.
With a rush, the icy water poured down her head, numbing her instantly. “Ah!”
“Call Gu Pingsheng. No matter where he is, tell him to come back immediately!” Wen Zhixia tossed the basin aside and spoke coldly to Aunt Zhao.
It was the first time Aunt Zhao had seen her truly angry. Without hesitation, she made the call.
Gu Pingsheng was halfway back when he saw Aunt Zhao’s call. He paused, but after hearing her words, his gaze darkened at once. He told the driver, “Return to the hospital.”
The driver glanced in the rearview, confirmed he’d heard right, and turned the car around.
Li Yueting glanced at Gu Pingsheng’s expression. She didn’t know exactly what had happened, but guessed it must be related to Zhao Fuhe.
Since losing her child, Zhao Fuhe had lost her usual composure and patience. Li Yueting was happy to watch her clash with Wen Zhixia, hoping to benefit from their conflict.
That Wen Zhixia would have someone call Gu Pingsheng directly was unexpected to Zhao Fuhe, but thinking about her current state, she felt she had nothing left to fear.
Gu Pingsheng appeared at the hospital entrance within fifteen minutes, striding in briskly.
As he approached the ward, he immediately saw the bedraggled Zhao Fuhe, and Wen Zhixia sitting nearby with a cold gaze.
Li Yueting, following behind, paused at the scene. She hadn’t expected Wen Zhixia to summon Gu Pingsheng under such circumstances. The imbalance was obvious; most people would sympathize with the one who looked so pitiable.
“What happened?” Gu Pingsheng looked to Aunt Zhao and asked.
Aunt Zhao glanced at Zhao Fuhe, then at Wen Zhixia, and began, “This lady just now—”
“Miss Zhao!” Li Yueting cried out as Zhao Fuhe suddenly collapsed unconscious onto the floor.
Zhao Fuhe, eyes closed and face pale, fainted less than two meters from Gu Pingsheng. His brow furrowed. “Why are you standing there? Call the doctor.”
Wen Zhixia, watching Gu Pingsheng’s anxious expression, let out a cold laugh. As he looked her way, she said, “Aunt Zhao, put Miss Zhao on the bed. She’s so fragile—if something happens, Mr. Gu will surely feel distressed.”
Aunt Zhao hesitated, reaching toward Zhao Fuhe, but Gu Pingsheng’s low, displeased voice stopped her: “Don’t say such things. Take her elsewhere. She won’t disturb your rest.”
Wen Zhixia raised her hand. “No need. I don’t plan to stay in the hospital any longer. Since all the expenses are Mr. Gu’s, might as well let your junior take over. Otherwise, with a new love and an old flame, you’ll wear yourself out caring for them both, and who knows how many women will be heartbroken.”
Only then did Gu Pingsheng notice she had already changed out of her patient gown.
Her mocking tone was hard to bear, especially for the person being ridiculed. He’d never noticed before that she could speak with such biting sarcasm.
She got up, but before she reached the door, Gu Pingsheng stopped her.
Wen Zhixia looked up, face stern. “What, I was the one who threw the water. Are you here to settle accounts with me?”
“You know I wouldn’t. Why must you speak to me like this?” Had he blamed her for anything?
Wen Zhixia pursed her lips, letting out a sardonic laugh. “How would I dare presume to guess Mr. Gu’s intentions now?”
At that moment, the doctor hurried in.
Wen Zhixia tried to leave, but Gu Pingsheng gripped her wrist, keeping her at his side.
The doctor and nurses began to move Zhao Fuhe to the bed, but Gu Pingsheng spoke first: “Take her to the next ward. Someone’s already staying here.”
The doctor paused, but said nothing, directing her to be moved elsewhere.
“You two, go check on her,” Gu Pingsheng said to Li Yueting and Aunt Zhao, sending them away.
Li Yueting glanced back before leaving.
Now only Gu Pingsheng and Wen Zhixia remained in the ward.
Gu Pingsheng said, “She disturbed your rest. Once—”
“Once the bone marrow donation surgery is over, you’ll send her away? Or perhaps you plan to hide her in some secret house?” Wen Zhixia retorted.
Gu Pingsheng’s gaze darkened abruptly at her mention of the transplant. “Did she tell you?”
Wen Zhixia remained silent.
“Don’t joke with your own health. After your surgery, I promise you’ll never see her again.” Gu Pingsheng stroked her face, his tone gentle and lingering. “She’s not worth your anger.”
In the past, even if she was angry, a few soft words from him would ease her mood. It had always been that way, for she never truly got angry with him.
But now, things were different.
She pushed away his hand, speaking seriously, “I will not accept her bone marrow.”
Gu Pingsheng’s fingers tensed, his dark eyes fixed on her for several seconds, voice deep, “Xiaxia, this isn’t something you can be capricious about. The surgery is scheduled, today you’ll begin your pre-op tests. I’ll stay in the hospital with you.”
Wen Zhixia repeated, “I will not accept it.”
Gu Pingsheng’s expression grew grim. “Give me a reason. Do you know how hard it is to find a suitable bone marrow match? You think you can just refuse?”
“So, Mr. Gu wants me to accept bone marrow obtained by selling yourself to another woman?” she said. “I can’t do that.”
Her words, calm and measured, instantly chilled the air in the ward.
Whenever Wen Zhixia thought of Gu Pingsheng sleeping with Zhao Fuhe, she felt nauseated, revolted.
