The door opened.

It was the left half of the door that swung open.

Xia Xiao’an stood at the threshold, dressed in a loose, beautiful dress. She looked frightened, delicate and pitiful.

This scene made the eyes of the two thugs at the door light up, and they were nearly drooling.

Tsk!

Girls who could remain so clean and pretty in the apocalypse were rare.

“So pretty—”

The thug in front reached out a paw, planning to get a feel, but before he could finish his words, a crossbow bolt lodged in his forehead.

He toppled straight over, falling with a splash into the rainwater.

The other thug beside him didn’t have time to call for help before a crossbow bolt pierced his throat.

“Close the door! Run!” commanded Su Miao, who had just killed both men.

Xia Xiao’an immediately slammed the door shut and ran for the stairs.

Su Miao, with a wave of her hand, moved a large cabinet to block the door once again.

“Damn it! How dare they kill our men!”

In less than fifteen seconds, the operation squad realized something was wrong here. One of them, carrying a submachine gun and blowing a whistle, led the charge toward Villa 36.

Two minutes later, fourteen people had gathered at the entrance of Villa 36.

Their operational squads were organized into groups of twenty, with each unit consisting of six, led by a squad leader and a deputy.

The squad leader’s name was Yan Xi; the deputy was Yin Kong.

The two were staunch comrades, with six years of experience as mercenaries abroad in their youth.

“Blast it!” Yan Xi ordered.

A team member immediately pulled a homemade explosive from a waterproof backpack, hooked it to the door, and lit the fuse.

With a thunderous boom, the remaining half of the villa's front door, along with the barricading cabinet, was reduced to splinters.

“Go!” Yan Xi signaled, sending the armed team members in first.

At this moment, Su Miao and Xia Xiao’an crouched on the second floor, trembling with fear. Especially Su Miao—her hands covered her ears, and she was on the verge of tears.

She could hold her own against ordinary intruders, but explosives and submachine guns were too terrifying.

She had only a crossbow and a sword. It was simply unfair!

“Sis, hold your ground like a true warrior,” Xia Xiao’an sobbed. “They’re coming up.”

Su Miao glanced at Xia Xiao’an beside her, realizing now was not the time for fear—but she truly was terrified!

No choice!

As the sounds came ever closer, Su Miao opened her right hand; a red fireball materialized, swelling instantly to the size of a watermelon. She hurled it down the stairwell.

Boom!

An explosion resounded.

The three charging up the stairs bore the brunt, blasted apart by the great fireball. Two more were flung backward, and half the staircase collapsed in the blast.

Those standing outside could even feel the entire villa shudder.

What the—?

“Fuck!” The squad leader Yan Xi, standing at the rear, looked stunned. Who the hell used explosives like this? Did they want to bring the whole villa down?

“There’s a real badass in there,” the deputy Yin Kong remarked, rubbing his bald head, excitement flashing across his face.

It had been a long time since anyone had made him feel both danger and exhilaration.

“Keep going!”

“I’ll lead the charge myself!”

Seeing the deputy rush in first, the shaken squad members immediately followed.

Before anyone could stick their heads out, Yin Kong sprayed bullets at the stairwell, guarding against any ambush.

But by now, Su Miao had already retreated with Xia Xiao’an to the third floor, again positioning herself at the stairwell, trembling all over.

The gunfire was simply terrifying!

“Sis, hold on!” Xia Xiao’an was beside herself. “Sis, they’re on the second floor already—almost to the third!”

Su Miao nodded. Suddenly, an idea struck her. She conjured a series of small water orbs and tossed them down the stairwell, quickly drenching it in water.

Bald-headed deputy Yin Kong, preparing to storm upward, halted at once. He glanced at the water and laughed, “Damn, thought it was gasoline for a second—scared me half to death.”

Gasoline?

Su Miao’s eyes lit up. She did indeed have plenty in her magical storage.

But if she really poured gasoline down there and set it alight, she’d probably burn herself alive as well.

“Follow me!” Yin Kong shouted, leading the charge.

As usual, he fired a barrage to pin down any resistance, then pressed forward.

But as he rounded the corner and moved ahead, he sensed something was wrong.

It was as if he had rushed straight into a pond, into a cube of water. He struggled to break free, but water forced its way into his body with every gasp, preventing even a cry for help.

He found himself unable to breathe.

What was happening? He was supposed to be charging upward, not into water—why was this happening?

Everything before him was utterly beyond his comprehension.

Fear crept into his heart. Even so, as a seasoned mercenary, he decided to hold his breath and look for any chance to escape.

But just then, a crossbow bolt flew at him, piercing his throat with deadly accuracy.

“Finally got rid of him,” Su Miao breathed in relief. That one was far too dangerous—he had to die!

She had made the staircase slick with water to slow their advance, forcing them to move cautiously. Then, when the critical moment came, she had lured the enemy to rush headlong into a giant water orb, causing them to drown.

There was just no way to fight head-on against people who opened fire so recklessly.

It was far too terrifying!

The giant water orb burst, and with a crash, swept the others charging up the stairs off their feet.

Screams rang out as the group tumbled down the stairs; a few struck their heads against the wall and instantly lost the ability to fight.

Su Miao acted quickly, darting out and loosing a rapid succession of crossbow bolts, each one hitting a fallen foe with precision.

Along the way, she noticed a bald corpse with three shiny bombs strapped to it.

Without thinking, Su Miao yanked out the pins, tossed the bombs down the hallway, and dashed up to the third floor.

It was going to blow!

It was going to blow!

It was going to blow!

At that moment, Xia Xiao’an had no idea what was happening. She only saw Su Miao rush back, press herself against the wall, and tremble uncontrollably.

“My dear sister, why are you like this again?” she wanted to encourage Su Miao, but just then, three massive explosions erupted below, making her ears ring and leaving her limp on the ground.

Sister Su Miao, what on earth did you just do?

o((⊙﹏⊙))o.

“Deputy! Deputy!”

The operations leader Yan Xi had planned to hold the ground below to prevent anyone from escaping out the windows, but he hadn’t expected Yin Kong to run into trouble.

Now he couldn’t sit still.

The earlier fights had gone so smoothly—when they took over this tourist district, they’d barely met resistance. They’d assumed there was nothing to fear, and so, when attacking this villa, they underestimated the people inside and lost five or six men right from the start.

Now, with deputy Yin Kong also gone, Yan Xi couldn’t return without an explanation.

Thinking of his boss, Chi Wannin, and her methods, he charged up the stairs himself.

Today, he had to eliminate everyone inside this villa.

But he had barely made it up a few steps when he heard several sharp, crisp sounds.

As a veteran special forces soldier, he recognized those sounds at once.

Bombs.

And they were bombs that had belonged to Yin Kong.

Worse yet, he was now on the stairs, with no way to hit the ground.

Damn it!

Boom!
